cosmological constant (symbol Λ)

A term introduced by Einstein into his gravitational field equations in order to allow a solution corresponding to a static universe. It can be understood as equivalent to an unknown cosmic repulsion that would tend to counter the attractive gravitational force, or an attractive force if its value is negative. Observational evidence is consistent with the value being zero or very small, and modern quantum cosmology attempts to account for its absence.
